As your departure date approaches, it&apos;s time to make the final preparations to ensure a smooth and stress-free adventure. Here&#x2019;s a step-by-step guide on what to do in the weeks leading up to your first visit to the Island of the Gods.</p><h2 id="1-get-your-revolut-card-ready">1. Get Your Revolut Card Ready</h2><p>One of the best ways to manage your money in Bali is by using a <a href="https://www.revolut.com/?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com" rel="noreferrer"><strong>Revolut</strong></a><strong> card</strong>. The free plan allows you to withdraw up to <strong>&#x20AC;200 without fees</strong>, and after that, there&#x2019;s a small fee. Revolut consistently offers <strong>the best exchange rates</strong>, even for regular payments in stores.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2025/03/revolut_small.png" class="kg-image" alt="Your First Trip to Bali: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go" loading="lazy" width="300" height="169"></figure><p>The two main banks in Bali&#x2014;<strong>BCA and Mandiri</strong>&#x2014;do not charge ATM withdrawal fees for Revolut users. You can find ATMs in major supermarket chains like <strong>Indomaret, Coco Mart</strong>, <strong>Circle K </strong> or <strong>Alfamart </strong> throughout <strong>Canggu, Uluwatu, Seminyak, Sanur, and Ubud</strong>. However, if you&apos;re heading to more remote areas, cash access may be limited. Never withdraw money in the ATM in the street. The good news? Most places that accept card payments also allow <strong>contactless (tap) transactions</strong>.</p>

<p></p><h2 id="2-get-travel-insurance">2. Get Travel Insurance</h2><p>Even though Bali is generally safe, unexpected situations like accidents or medical emergencies can happen. Relying solely on Indonesia&apos;s national healthcare system may not be ideal, so having <strong>travel insurance</strong> is essential.</p><p>We strongly recommend purchasing <strong>comprehensive travel insurance</strong> for yourself and your family <strong>before departure</strong> in your home country. However, if you forget, you can still buy one online&#x2014;even after departure. One reliable option is <a href="https://safetywing.com/nomad-insurance?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com" rel="noreferrer"><strong>SafetyWing&apos;s Nomad Insurance</strong></a>.</p><h2 id="3-buy-a-virtual-sim-card-before-you-arrive">3. Buy a Virtual SIM Card Before You Arrive</h2><p>Bali operates on the <strong>internet</strong>&#x2014;whether it&apos;s booking hotels, ordering food, or arranging transport. While most hotels and restaurants offer WiFi, you&#x2019;ll want <strong>mobile data for when you&apos;re on the go</strong>.</p><p>A <strong>virtual SIM card</strong> is the best solution. Look for an eSIM plan that covers your entire stay with <strong>ample data</strong> (you won&#x2019;t need a local phone number, just data access). Two great providers are:</p><ul><li><strong>ByteSim</strong>: <a href="https://bytesim.com/products/esim-indonesia?sku=18056041319537773287490459&amp;ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">Visit ByteSim</a> (more manual setup required)</li><li><strong>Airalo</strong>: <a href="https://www.airalo.com/?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">Visit Airalo</a> (easy app-based setup)</li></ul><h3 id="important-tip-activate-your-esim-before-boarding-your-last-flight-to-bali-so-you-have-an-internet-connection-upon-arrival">Important Tip: <strong>Activate your eSIM before boarding your last flight to Bali</strong> so you have an internet connection upon arrival.</h3><p>For the best coverage, choose <strong>TelkomSel</strong> network &#x2014;it&#x2019;s the strongest provider in populated areas.</p><h2 id="4-install-gojek-grab-apps">4. Install GoJek &amp; Grab Apps</h2><p>Bali has a <strong>super-app culture</strong>, and you&#x2019;ll need <strong>GoJek</strong> (<a href="https://www.gojek.com/en-id?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">Download</a>) and <strong>Grab</strong> (<a href="https://www.grab.com/id/?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">Download</a>) for almost everything:</p><ul><li><strong>Ride-hailing</strong> (cars &amp; scooters)</li><li><strong>Food delivery</strong></li><li><strong>Massages &amp; other services</strong></li></ul><p>These apps <strong>compete aggressively</strong>, meaning <strong>daily promos</strong> and discounts. Always check both apps before ordering to findthe best deal!</p>

<h2 id="5-get-your-e-visa-before-you-arrive">5. Get Your e-Visa Before You Arrive</h2><p>To enter Bali, most travelers need a <strong>Visa on Arrival (VOA)</strong>, allowing a <strong>30-day stay (extendable for another 30 days)</strong>.</p><p>For a smoother arrival process, purchase it online at the <strong>official immigration website</strong>: <a href="https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">eVisa Indonesia</a>. As of <strong>March 2025</strong>, the VOA costs <strong>500,000 IDR (500k)</strong>. Buying it in advance <strong>saves time</strong> at immigration!</p><h2 id="6-pay-the-bali-tourist-tax-online">6. Pay the Bali Tourist Tax Online</h2><p>Starting in 2024, Bali has introduced a tourist tax of 150,000 IDR per person, per visit. This tax helps support local sustainability and infrastructure. To avoid delays, it&#x2019;s best to pay online before arrival at the official website: <a href="https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/home?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com" rel="noreferrer">Love Bali</a>.</p><p><strong>Fast-Track Immigration Tip:</strong></p><p>If you<strong> pay the tourist tax online</strong> and <strong>apply for your e-Visa online</strong>, you can <strong>skip the regular immigration queue</strong> and go directly to the automated gates, making your arrival process much faster!</p><h2 id="7-complete-your-indonesia-customs-declaration-form">7. Complete Your Indonesia Customs Declaration Form</h2><p>Before leaving the airport, you <strong>must</strong> present a <strong>QR code</strong> from the <strong>Indonesia Customs Declaration Form</strong>.</p><ul><li>Visit <a href="https://bali.com/bali/customs-declaration-form-indonesia/?ref=johnnyglobetrotter.com">Bali Customs Form</a></li><li>Click the <strong>&#x201C;Customs Form&#x201D;</strong> button</li><li>Fill in your details</li><li><strong>Take a screenshot</strong> of the generated <strong>QR code</strong></li><li>Use the <strong>left queue</strong> at customs to avoid unnecessary bag scans</li></ul><h2 id="8-withdraw-cash-at-the-airport">8. Withdraw Cash at the Airport</h2><p>After passing customs, you&#x2019;ll find <strong>two ATMs</strong>:</p><ul><li><strong>Blue ATM (BCA) on the left</strong></li><li><strong>Red/Orange ATM (Mandiri) straight ahead</strong></li></ul><p>Withdraw at least <strong>500,000 IDR (preferably 1 million IDR)</strong> to cover initial expenses, like transport.</p><h2 id="9-find-an-affordable-ride-from-the-airport">9. Find an Affordable Ride from the Airport</h2><p>If you <strong>haven&#x2019;t pre-booked a driver</strong>, avoid the <strong>airport taxis</strong> inside the terminal&#x2014;they are <strong>safe but overpriced</strong>. Instead, head to the <strong>main parking garage</strong>, where drivers wait.</p><h3 id="pro-tips-for-getting-a-fair-ride">Pro Tips for Getting a Fair Ride:</h3><ul><li>Some drivers <strong>display their phone screens</strong> showing GoJek/Grab prices. Pick one using fair rates.</li><li>GoJek/Grab prices at the airport <strong>are inflated</strong>&#x2014;they can be <strong>double</strong> the standard rate!</li><li><strong>Best hack?</strong> Walk to the garage&#x2014;drivers there offer <strong>cheaper fares</strong>.</li></ul><p>Bonus Tip: <strong>Going to Nusa Dua?</strong> Ask if the driver can take the <strong>toll bridge</strong>. It&#x2019;s <strong>faster, scenic</strong>, and costs just <strong>15-20k extra</strong>.</p><h2 id="10-pack-smart-enjoy-your-trip">10. Pack Smart &amp; Enjoy Your Trip!</h2><p>One last thing: <strong>Don&#x2019;t forget sunscreen!</strong> Bali&#x2019;s sun is strong, and you&#x2019;ll want to protect your skin while enjoying the beautiful beaches and landscapes.</p><p>With these preparations, your first trip to Bali will be <strong>smooth, hassle-free, and unforgettable</strong>. Unlike many of Bali&apos;s beaches adorned with black sands, Uluwatu boasts pristine stretches of white sand, a haven for sun-seekers and a paradise for surfers alike. Renowned for its advanced surf spots, Uluwatu beckons seasoned wave riders to its shores. Each beach highlighted in this article features quaint warungs where visitors can rent a cozy chaise lounge for the day while indulging in delicious food and refreshing beverages, immersing themselves in the serenity of nature, perhaps sipping from a freshly cracked coconut.</p><h2 id="nunggalan-pantai-nunggalan">Nunggalan (Pantai Nunggalan)</h2><p>Nunggalan Beach stands as the most secluded gem among the beaches featured in this list. Accessible only after a challenging 15-minute descent (with a 20-minute ascent back up) through dense jungle along a steep, often slippery path, the journey demands determination. Yet, the reward is unparalleled: panoramic vistas encompassing everything from paragliders to horses, against a backdrop of crystal-clear waters.<br>For those eager to witness the iconic bow of the stranded ship, a key attraction, we advise checking the tide from atop the cliff before descending. High tide offers the optimal conditions for capturing stunning photos and videos. Using a surf website such as Surfline&apos;s tide charts for Uluwatu can provide invaluable insight prior to your visit.<br>Given its remoteness, solitude is nearly guaranteed. Visitors can opt to spend an entire day ensconced in one of the available chaise lounges, reveling in the tranquility. The waves cater to both surfers and swimmers, particularly during high tide. Witnessing the glass fiber bow emerge during high tide is a spectacle in itself, while low tide unveils the enchanting expanse of green algae-coated rocks, a sight of natural beauty unmatched.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-gallery-card kg-width-wide"><div class="kg-gallery-container"><div class="kg-gallery-row"><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang1.jpeg" width="720" height="900" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/Nuggalang1.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang1.jpeg 720w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang2.jpeg" width="720" height="900" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/Nuggalang2.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang2.jpeg 720w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang3.jpeg" width="900" height="720" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/Nuggalang3.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/Nuggalang3.jpeg 900w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div></div></div></figure><h2 id="nyang-nyang-beach">Nyang-Nyang Beach</h2><p>Nyang-Nyang Beach, nestled away from the bustling crowds and main beaches of Uluwatu, remains one of the area&apos;s lesser-known treasures. For adept motorcyclists, reaching this secluded haven is feasible, with the sandy shores almost within reach. However, for less experienced riders, it&apos;s advisable to park before the cliff and navigate a more manageable, paved path down to the beach.<br>Once there, visitors can luxuriate in the soft sands or explore the numerous small water lagoons formed amidst the green corals during low tide. The occasional sight of a paraglider descending adds to the thrill of the experience, reflecting the excitement shared by tourists. Several warungs dotted along the shore offer shaded retreats complete with umbrellas and sunbeds, perfect for unwinding with a light snack. Additionally, Nyang-Nyang Beach is renowned for its full moon parties, adding an extra layer of excitement to the atmosphere.<br>For those seeking a more secluded retreat, a leisurely stroll to the right side of the beach during low tide leads to a hidden enclave. Beyond a small natural tunnel carved by rocks lies a tranquil oasis where verdant vistas and solitude intertwine. Adventurous souls may even venture to swim amidst the rocky formations in a serene natural canal, further enhancing the sense of escape and immersion in nature&apos;s splendor.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-gallery-card kg-width-wide kg-card-hascaption"><div class="kg-gallery-container"><div class="kg-gallery-row"><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang1.jpeg" width="900" height="720" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/NyangNyang1.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang1.jpeg 900w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang3.jpeg" width="900" height="720" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/NyangNyang3.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang3.jpeg 900w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang2.jpeg" width="900" height="720" loading="lazy" alt="5 beaches in Uluwatu" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/NyangNyang2.jpeg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/NyangNyang2.jpeg 900w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div></div></div><figcaption><p dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">NyangNyang Beach</span></p></figcaption></figure><h2 id="thomas-beach">Thomas Beach </h2><p>Thomas Beach, nestled between Padang-Padang and Uluwatu Beaches, offers a picturesque expanse of white sands hugged by towering cliffs and the azure sea. What began as a planned one-night stay evolved into an unexpected and extended sojourn, spanning five nights and counting. Amed&apos;s allure lies not only in its tranquil surroundings but also in the unique experiences waiting to be uncovered, all against the backdrop of a cooler temperature compared to the rest of Bali.</p><p>This fisherman town, situated in East Bali and set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Agung, the island&apos;s largest volcano, offers a respite from the usual tropical heat. The coolness that permeates Amed invites visitors to a state of calm, allowing them to unwind amidst the rhythmic patter of raindrops and the distant murmur of the iconic volcano.</p><p>Upon our arrival, the charming discovery of Rimba, a cozy Western-style caf&#xE9; nestled in the city center, added a delightful touch to our Amed experience. The menu, a fusion of local and international flavors, left us spoiled for choice. Little did we know, our one-night stay would transform into an opportunity to savor multiple delights on their menu over the course of the week. Noteworthy recommendations include the irresistible Mister Pink Smoothie Ball, the hearty beef burger (with ample vegan options), and the delectable Kofta Wrap.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-gallery-card kg-width-wide"><div class="kg-gallery-container"><div class="kg-gallery-row"><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0642.jpg" width="675" height="900" loading="lazy" alt="Amed in the Rainy Season" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/IMG_0642.jpg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0642.jpg 675w"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0664.jpg" width="720" height="900" loading="lazy" alt="Amed in the Rainy Season" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/IMG_0664.jpg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0664.jpg 720w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div><div class="kg-gallery-image"><img src="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0673.jpg" width="720" height="900" loading="lazy" alt="Amed in the Rainy Season" srcset="https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/size/w600/2024/02/IMG_0673.jpg 600w, https://johnnyglobetrotter.com/content/images/2024/02/IMG_0673.jpg 720w" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px"></div></div></div></figure><p></p><p>As nightfall draped Amed in a mystical ambiance, our culinary adventures continued with the discovery of Warung Bobo on the beach. While the food was a food, the true magic unfolded through a musical group accompanied by a lively bunch of kids. Together, they belted out powerful renditions of recent international hits in various languages, creating an unforgettable experience.
